Cycling shoes are now made from discarded tyres and plastic bottles from the recycling industry.
Cortez Shoes in Dublin is a small shop that makes baby girl’s shoe for families with small children.
Its owner, Susan Connolly, said the company had become a source of pride for her.
“I don’t see the need to use anything that isn’t recycled,” she said.
“There’s plenty of plastic and tyres and other rubbish out there, and that’s why we do it.”
It is not only the disposable shoes that come from the recyclable industry.
Other brands are also using recycled materials for their products.
There are other options such as the new, more environmentally friendly version of a disposable, a bike saddle, and other bike products from the Australian company Bicycle Australia.
It is hoped the company will bring in a profit.
“Our goal is to make cycling more environmentally-friendly, but also to support the local economy,” Ms Connolly said.
Bike Ireland is an Australian company that has been working in the cycle industry for many years.
“We believe in creating a safe and sustainable cycle space for people of all abilities,” a spokesperson said.
