In the summer of 2016, a group of Danish designers launched a shoe storage product.
The product was called Dansko.
The idea was to store and store-recycle shoes.
The products are now popular among shoe enthusiasts, but the startup still hasn’t caught on with the mainstream shoe companies.
“I think we’ve hit a ceiling, we haven’t got a mass market yet,” Danskobus founder Jørn Skarsgaard told Vice News.
The founder and CEO of Danske Kolles, an outdoor gear company, said he had a similar problem with his first shoe storage solution.
“We have a lot of ideas but we haven the capital,” Skarsgard said.
“And so it’s very hard to get traction.”
It’s no surprise, then, that the company has struggled to make a splash with retailers.
“The most popular products on the market are either sneakers or jeans,” Skargard said, referring to shoes and jeans.
“That’s the main reason we started Danska.”
DansKolles shoe storage app, DansKO, has been around for over two years and has been featured in numerous media outlets, but Skarsgolds idea was different.
DansKRolles has a shoe store app that can be used to store shoes, jeans, shoes and other gear.
The app uses a GPS-based tracking system and can be accessed by anyone with a smartphone or tablet.
The DansKERolles app is available for Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone.
“In my experience, people really like the idea of being able to store everything,” Skarbjær told Vice.
“They’re very excited about being able, at any time, to just take a glance at their shoes or take a look at the clothes they wear and it’s easy to track.”
The company hopes to roll out its app to more retail stores in the future.
“It’s really a way of getting more visibility in the store,” Skarlsgaard said.
The company is looking to partner with a local shoe store, so they can use the Danskerolles store app to track their customers and inventory.
The startup hopes to have a presence in as many as 25 stores, but so far it’s only been available in Copenhagen, Norway and Helsinki, Finland.
“A lot of the brands we’re working with are still brand new,” Skarges said.
In Denmark, it’s not uncommon for companies to launch shoe storage products at a time when they need a lot more resources.
Dorskolens shoe storage startup, Dorsko, was initially founded in 2014.
In 2016, it raised a Series B round led by a venture capital firm, and in 2017 it went public.
The firm is still in the early stages, but Dorskos app has been used by some of the biggest brands in the country, including Nike, Adidas, H&M, Zara and even the Danish national soccer team.
DensKollers CEO Lars Båthlund, who is a native of Copenhagen, said that the shoe storage idea is unique.
“This was a very unusual product for us,” Båtland said.
While it’s still a very young company, he said, “We are really excited about the future.”
He added that the startup is currently working with a shoe retailer in Copenhagen.
“At this stage, we have no plans to launch in other markets,” Bøthlund said.
As DansKA, DainsKollens shoes are designed to be worn on the go, and they can also be used in the gym.
“If we are able to use the app to help track our customers and the shoes they wear, then we can really get in touch with our customers in the shop and make them aware of our new product,” Skarrgaard said, noting that the app could also help the company sell its shoes at a lower price.
“There is a lot that can happen in the space,” Skara said.
